The first Commando Stingray II light tank (front cover) is now under
construction and will be running tests within the next few months,
prior to demonstrations in Taiwan in November/December 1994. This is
the latest version of the Commando Stingray light tank (above), which
was developed by Cadillac-Gage Textron (Warren, Michigan 48090, USA)
as a private venture in the early 1980s, with the aim of combining
the firepower of a main battle tank with a lighter hull, thus
offering greater strategic and tactical mobility. The weapon selected
was a low recoil force (LRF) version of the Royal Ordnance L7 105mm,
which was effectively the West's standard tank gun (right), for which
a wide range of ammunition was available. The prototype first ran in
August 1984 and the type was ordered by the Royal Thai Army, with 106
being delivered between 1988 and 1990.
Cadillac-Gage then began work on an improved version, which was
entered in the US Army's Armored Gun System (AGS) competition.
Despite losing to the United Defense Close Combat Vehicle - Light
(CCV-L) (now designated the XM, Cadillac-Gage Textron has continued
work on this new version. The Commando Stingray II's hull is
constructed of a newly-developed ``2001'' special, highhardness
steel, ballistic plate, with a spaced outer layer and skirts of the
same material (see cover picture). This new steel will give a more
robust and durable hull than in the earlier version, together with
increased ballistic protection.
The automotive system has also been upgraded, the standard Detroit
Diesel 8V92 TA now giving 550hp (485kW), with a more powerful 650hp
engine available as an option. A revised digital electronic control
system for both the engines and the transmission has been fitted,
while the torsion-bar suspension has been adapted to support the
higher vehicle weight. The vehicle will be the first to be fitted
with the GEC-Marconi DFCS Mk3 fire-control system, which is based on
that used in the British Army's Challenger 2 main battle tank and
incorporates an improved processor. The fire-control system is
coupled to the gunner's thermal-imaging, stabilized-head sight, which
features optional automatic target tracking. The gunner's thermal
sight picture is relayed to the commander via a small auxiliary
display alongside his normal sight.
The AGS (XM, which is specifically configured to be airdropped from
a C-130 Hercules, has a baseline armour fit that gives protection
against NATO 7.62mm ammunition and its gross weight (maximum with
level 1 armour) is 17,463kg. The Stingray II design is not subject to
similar constraints, allowing a higher gross weight of 22,600kg,
while its baseline armour is claimed to give all-round protection
against 14.5mm attack. Further according to Cadillac-Gage, the
Stingray II will be 25-30% cheaper than AGS (XM and will be
available for service in 1997, two years earlier than its rival.

USA, trials with the six prototypes of the United Defense LP
XM8 Armored Gun System (AGS) are progressing well. The US Army is
expected to award the company a Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP)
contract soon.
Textron Marine & Land Systems is still working on its private
venture Stingray II light tank, which is aimed at the export market.
The Stingray I was sold to Thailand, which took delivery of 106
vehicles.
