http://www.shreveporttimes.com/story/news/local/2015/02/17/mothballed-gains-new-lease-life/23554065/

'Ghost Rider' (tail number 61-007), was flown to its operating base at Minot in North Dakota on 27 September following a 19-month refurbishment by the 76th Aircraft Maintenance Group at Tinker Air Force Base (AFB) in Oklahoma.

With approximately 45,000 man-hours having gone into restoring the aircraft to full operating capability, 'Ghost Rider' will now join the 5th Bomb Wing of the Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC).

The USAF announced its plans to restore 'Ghost Rider' to service in February 2015 to maintain its 76-strong B-52H fleet following a mishap at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana in 2014 that left a B-52 severely damaged. Since work began, another B-52 was destroyed in an accident on the island of Guam, though no announcement has been made as to whether the USAF will repeat its effort in restoring another retired aircraft to service.

The newly restored Stratofortress, serial number 61-0007, had been in 1000-level storage at AMARG alongside twelve other B-52Hs, far away from the ragged, chopped up Stratofortress carcasses on the other side of the boneyard. Unlike other 1000-level aircraft, or inviolate storage where an airframe is made safe and preserved without losing any parts to salvage, these bombers are looked after in a far more detailed and careful fashion at AMARG. Each Stratofortress in this small group has its own plane captain at the base whose primary responsibility is to monitor its health regularly and quickly intercede when maintenance is necessary.

http://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/americas-lethal-new-b-21-vs-the-b-2-stealth-bomber-15352

A tactical fighter-sized stealth aircraft must be optimized to defeat higher-frequency bands such the C, X and Ku bands as a simple matter of physics, but a strategic bomber like the B-2 or LRS-B can be larger to counter lower frequency radars. There is a “step change” in a stealth aircraft’s signature once the frequency wavelength exceeds a certain threshold and causes a resonant effect. Typically, that resonance occurs when a feature on an aircraft—such as a tail-fin—is less than eight times the size of a particular frequency wavelength. That means a bomber like the B-21 has to have allowances for two feet or more of radar absorbent material coatings on every surface or the designers are forced to make trades as to which frequency bands they optimize the aircraft to operate in. As such, to defeat low frequency radars operating in the L, UHF and potentially the VHF bands (this is easier said than done—and could in fact be impossible), a flying wing design is in effect, mandatory.

... and potentially the VHF bands (this is easier said than done—and could in fact be impossible)
VHF 30–300 MHz 1–10 m.

vArri.jpg

GE, Rolls, Pratt Vie For B-52 Engine Upgrade
Mar 13, 2017 James Drew | Aerospace Daily & Defense Report

Candidates to upgrade the B-52's 1961-vintage TF33 low-bypass turbofan include the GE Aviation CF34-10, Pratt & Whitney TF33 Engine Enhancement Package and Rolls-Royce BR700: U.S. Air Force

Engine manufacturers are lining up to upgrade or replace the Boeing B-52H’s outdated and inefficient Pratt & Whitney TF33 low-bypass turbofan engines to keep the mighty Cold War bomber flying beyond 2050.

U.S. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Stephen Wilson told Congress on March 8 that the service must explore options for replacing the TF33, which powered the first H-model B-52 flight on March 6, 1961, almost six decades ago.

GE Aviation, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce tell Aviation Week they are actively engaged with the Air Force about the re-emerging requirement, offering ready-made commercial derivative engines or, in Pratt’s case, a TF33 upgrade package.

Their proposals come after the Air Force and Boeing proposed swapping the TF33 for eight modern, 17,000-19,000-lb.-thrust-class regional/business jet engines instead of earlier four-engine alternatives, which were deemed too risky because of the necessary structural modifications and airflow changes around the bomber’s nuclear-armed weapons.

The service once proposed a quartet of CF6 high-bypass turbofans, which are derived from the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy’s TF39 (pictured being tested by a B-52). It also considered the 757-class PW2040 and RB211 series. But recent analysis points to an eight-engine solution to limit airframe modification.

That would require at least 608 powerplants for today’s operational feet of 76 B-52Hs, plus several sets of spares.

The Air Force has not commissioned or conducted any wind tunnel or flight tests of candidate engines in the past several years. But market research suggests there are enough engine options on the commercial market to warrant a competition.

A request for information issued in 2014 sought alternative solutions that achieve 10-25% better fuel consumption and 15-25 years of use between schedule depot overhauls. On Feb. 3, the government issued another RFI, this time seeking TF33 replacements, specifying “regional/business-size jet engines.”

“Acquisition strategies are in the process of being formed for both the purchase of the engine and the integration on the aircraft,” a service spokesman said on March 13. “If the Air Force decides to fund a re-engine program in the future, it will assess all procurement options to create the best value for the government.”

GE Aviation CF34-10

GE Aviation is a longtime propulsion system supplier for the Air Force’s bomber force, including the four-engine Boeing B-1B (F101-102) and Northrop Grumman B-2A (F118-100). The company says it supports the Air Force’s B-52 re-engining plan and would offer the 18,000-lb.-thrust-class CF34-10, developed from the TF34/CF34 family.

The smaller 9,000-lb.-thrust TF34-100 powers the service’s Fairchild Republic A-10 “Warthog” attack aircraft. The latest commercial CF34-10 series powers the Brazilian Embraer 190, 195 and Lineage 1000 and Chinese Comac ARJ21 regional jets.

“While no GE engines have been demonstrated on the B-52, the CF34-10 is an economical eight-engine replacement,” says Karl Sheldon, GE vice president and general manager of large military turbofan engines. “We are excited to compete for the opportunity to fly the CF34 on this strategic asset.”

Pratt & Whitney Engine Enhancement Package

Nobody has more experience with the 56-year-old TF33 than the original designer and manufacturer, P&W.

The company says it could offer a new commercial engine, but believes an upgrade makes the most sense.

“Commercial engines offer advantages of higher fuel savings, extended mission range, reduced aerial refueling and minimized overhaul maintenance,” a company spokesman says. “However, all commercial engines in this class require increased ability to support the B-52H electric and hydraulic load requirements, and would also require extensive airframe integration and flight testing.”

The firm’s engine enhancement package would address the TF33’s performance, durability, reliability, fuel consumption and time between scheduled overhauls as much as possible without needing to buy new. “The TF33 currently meets all B-52H power and performance specifications and would not require any changes to the aircraft structure,” the company says.

P&W is pitching this as the “affordable option.” Digitally-controlled commercial propulsors would also need to be militarized and hardened against electromechanical pulses resulting from nuclear explosions as well as cyberattacks.

Rolls-Royce BR700

Headquartered in Indianapolis, British engine maker RR’s U.S. division has already had “several conversations” with the Air Force about a B-52 propulsion upgrade. The company would offer something from its BR700 series, which already powers the Air Force’s Gulfstream V/C-37A personnel transport fleet and the Bombardier E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node—based on the Global Express.

The alternatives in the B-52’s thrust class are the BR715 and BR725 series, but the company has not decided which to offer.

“A decision has not been reached yet, as we await the specific requirements,” says Thomas Hartmann, RR’s senior vice president for U.S. customer business. “We are confident we can meet the technical and availability requirements.”

(Pratt & Whitney):
https://www.flightglobal.com/news/a...ing-upgrade-of-b-52s-original-tf33-en-424327/
"We don’t have computer-aided drawings, so they’re all prints because it was back in the day when we developed this engine"...

...
It would be technically difficult to swap out the B-52’s engines because it would need new nacelles, and the business case isn’t there for a complete replacement. With the cost of fuel also down, ... it would be better to reduce the maintenance cost.

“What we’re looking at right now is how to keep the Pratt & Whitney TF33 on-wing longer,” ... “The fuel price is kind of down, so we’re looking at an improvements package for the TF33 that will keep it on-wing and allows the air force to reduce their maintenance costs.

“We think that’s a good approach and it will be less costly because you won’t have to do major airframe changes, because if you put a new engine on the B-52 you need a new nacelle.”
...

In July, the air force said it was considering purchasing 650 engines, which suggests it was leaning toward an eight-engine option since there are only 76 B-52s in the service’s inventory today.

The TF33 also powers the in-service 707-300-based Northrop E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS) and 707-320-based Boeing E-3 Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS).

http://www.airpowerstrategy.com/2016/11/22/old-dog-new-engines/
...Even if the USAF could reduce fuel consumption in its entire fleet of aircraft, all of them, by 25% and save more than 500 million gallons of fuel per year it would save $1B per year. Sounds like solid savings, however that represents less than 1 percent of the USAF budget.

In the past 20 years there have been no less than eight separate official studies on the subject of replacing the engines on the B-52. Sometimes the study looked only at the B-52, sometimes it encompassed the entire USAF fleet, sometimes only those who utilize a particular engine. In all cases they found fuel savings and fuel efficiency are not reason enough to justify the cost of the program.

...On the outset of the KC-135 re-engine program, it was viewed as a straight forward engine replacement. However, the USAF was unable to complete the program without unnecessary cost and schedule overruns. Even with all of the data and lessons learned from the DC‑8 and 707 re-engine. Unforeseen operational limitations showed, schedule slips occurred, production quantities changed which served to increase total program costs. That logically led to a longer payback period and fewer modified aircraft.
The original designers knew that the rudder was underpowered. An aircraft the size of the B‑52 requires a massive rudder that does not exist. ... However, the true problem was asymmetry.

Aircraft are most susceptible to asymmetric conditions during takeoff. An engine loss when the airplane is rolling down the runway, accelerating towards takeoff, can be catastrophic. When an engine fails during takeoff, the yawing moment displaces the airplane from the center of the runway. Rudder authority is what keeps the plane on the runway, however rudder effectiveness is dictated by speed. The faster the plane is, the more effective the rudder becomes. The airspeed at which the airplane, after engine failure, deviates 30 feet from the runway centerline, despite using maximum rudder (but without the use of nose wheel steering) is called the Minimum Control speed on the Ground (VMCG). The B-52 rudder is sufficient to handle one engine loss during takeoff only when that failure is within a certain speed range and the failure concerns certain engines. Overall, the B-52 cannot pass this standard without the use of nose wheel steering. The Flight Manual specifically calls for the use of full rudder in any engine out scenario, the failure to do so could result in an increase of minimum control speeds of up to 25 knots. Today’s B‑52 would not pass FAA certifications.

...If the B-52 is retrofitted with a 4-engine setup, the rudder will not be capable of maintaining control in asymmetric conditions. A 4‑engine B-52 will require a new rudder. While an 8‑engine retrofit would reduce the risk in this area, it would not eliminate the necessity for testing. The thrust range is the particular concern. The 17,000 pounds of thrust of the TF33 is already outside the limits of the rudder. The current B-52 is thrust limited and does not utilize full power. Many new engine programs have dreams of smaller runways, higher temperatures, and greater takeoff weights. These things will not be possible for the B-52. The new engine will most likely have to be de-rated to maintain a margin of safety or have a new rudder system designed. A new rudder would likely be cost prohibitive.
While the B‑52 program maintains 855 TF33 engines, the USAF as a whole cares for 2300 TF33 engines. True cost savings is in removing all of the TF33s. That means a re-engine program for the B-52, E-3, E-8, and OC/WC‑135s and the facilities and programs to maintain those engines.
...
This will increase program and technical risk by including 4 other weapon systems, however, without the other weapon systems the program does not meet its primary goal of cost savings.
