Air Force Offers Up Options for a Post-JSTARS Future
https://www.military.com/dodbuzz/20...e-management-system-will-be-based-robins.htmlThe US Air Force’s fleet of E-8 JSTARS is earmarked external link for retirement by the mid-2020s. The National Defense Authorization Act endorses the Air Force’s plan to replace the E-8 JSTARS with a new network of sensors spread across unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft, called the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS). The USA’s 17-plane E-8C Joint Surveillance Targeting and Attack Radar System fleet’s ability to monitor enemy ground movements over very wide areas, while seeing through problematic weather conditions, has made it an invaluable contributor to every US military ground campaign over the last 15+ years. In the future the E-8’s role will be filled by the MQ-9 UAV. The ABMS is a network of de-centralized systems, which fuses the data from hundreds of sensors to provide situational awareness for combatant commanders across the globe. The current NDAA provides $120 million for the accelerating the development of the ABMS and its integration onto the MQ-9.
Robins Air Force Base has been selected to host an elite system that will fuse intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor data from around the world, the Air Force announced Wednesday.
...
The ABMS is intended to replace the current JSTARS fleet, which will keep flying until the mid-to-late 2020s. The network, which fuses the data from hundreds of sensors to provide situational awareness for combatant commanders across the globe, will function "as [a] decentralized system that draws on all domains," said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein.
...
The network will leverage air and space systems and will include "a fusion center and associated supporting activities," the service said. "In addition, the network will also include some remotely piloted aircraft at Robins with sensors capable of collecting and transmitting information from the battlefield.
Peres's discussions with President Clinton about a negotiated settlement with Syria will doubtless deal with the fate of Israel's early warning stations on the Golan and on Mount Hermon. These facilities have long made it possible for Israel to learn whether Syria has offensive designs. Not surprisingly, Rabin believed that the early warning stations were essential to Israel's security; Rabin, moreover, held that they had to be manned by Israeli personnel. Peres, however, according to Ma'oz and others, believes that because the strategic balance in the area favors Israel, the future of the stations is less important than other concerns. Thus, Peres may well be open to turning the early warning facilities over to U.S. troops or even consider relinquishing them -- opting instead for aerial surveillance by American J-Stars, a sophisticated airborne electronic system that's been used primarily by the U.S. military.

structural improvements and other modifications could allow the aircraft to fly safely for another 40-50 years.
