Rheinmetall has been awarded a EUR300 million (USD328 million) contract in relation to 44 Leopard 2A7+ main battle tanks (MBTs) and 24 Panzerhaubitze (PzH) 2000 self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) destined for Hungary, according to a 30 September press release.
Rheinmetall noted that it will be providing the main armament and fire control technology for the Leopards as well as the main armament, fire controls, and chassis for the PzH 2000s.
The package also includes the production and supply of 13 HX and TGS logistics trucks. Deliveries of the entire package are scheduled to start in 2021, with completion expected in 2025, the press release stated.
Kraus-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) won the Hungarian contract in December 2018, which was valued at EUR500 million at the time. The contract also included 12 second-hand Leopard 2A4s to be used for training purposes.
It is understood that the hull and turret structures of the Hungarian Leopards will be manufactured by Metka in Greece, as was the case for the 62 Leopard 2A7s supplied to Qatar, before being sent to Germany for final assembly.
